Selected Rosie the Riveter Stories..

A unified effort to find these women throughout West Virginia began on March 29th, 2009 with a full-page, color Charleston Gazette ad saying, “Help us find Rosies.” Now, 25 “Rosies” are interviewed on videotape. At least 30 more have given their stories by telephone, 25 wait, and 25 are expected to emerge. Story after story, the women’s human experiences transcend political, geographic and other “man-made” boundaries.

Garnet Kozielec’s Love Pat

“I learned blue prints, welding - lots more than riveting. My partner from Kentucky, Anne, was the bucker and I was the riveter on the wings. We took great pride in everything we did.

When a plane was finished and ready to fly out, I’d pat it, like it was a real, living human being and say, ‘Now, you take care of our boys.’

‘Course I was thinking of my fiancé, Henry, and my brothers.” Everybody was thinking of somebody.”

Hazel Bowman’s Children

“Lots of us in our family went up to Michigan. Mom and Dad went to take care of the children. Government seen to that. Housing and everything. Crowded but we was together.

I was an inspector on airplane parts. We was real proud. It was hard work. No fooling around. It had to be right. It made me more independent.

My husband was in Europe. Him and me never left Turkey Holler {Boone County} after we come back. We never had no children, but we took care of all kinds of children on Turkey Holler. You ask anybody. They know.

We have started transcribing the recordings and videos and will publish more later. This is one of the reasons we are asking for volunteers and financial contributors to help us. We need help in transcribing the interviews, whether the help is paid for by a donor or, precious you, volunteer.
